Brad Austin, PE, CSP of Poole Fire Protection recently received a plaque for serving on the validation committee for the 5th Edition of Fire Protection, Detection, and Suppression Systems with IFSTA. International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) manuals have been written and validated by firefighters and fire protection experts for over 80 years. Each IFSTA manual is regularly updated to stay current with the ever changing fire protection industry. Each time a manual is updated, a team of volunteer subject matter experts from across the United States and Canada work diligently to validate that the content of the manuals are still relevant and accurate. The validation process normally takes 1-2 years and involves regular teleconference and in-person meetings by the validation committee. Validation committee members are also tasked with developing new technical content for the manuals, providing case studies to illustrate the various contents of the manuals, and providing updated photographs to keep manuals from looking outdated. The Fire Protection, Detection, and Suppression Systems manual familiarizes fire service and other interested personnel with the types, arrangements, and operating principles of these systems. Topics addressed include fire detection and alarm systems, smoke management systems, water supply, fire pumps, automatic sprinkler systems, standpipe and hose systems, special extinguishing systems, and portable fire extinguishers. The new manual will come out in 2016. When asked about his experience with the IFSTA validation process, Austin stated: “It was very enjoyable and rewarding to be a part of such a time honored and important process. Having experts from around the country collaborating made for great discussions and should result in an excellent manual.” This is a great accomplishment for Brad, whose efforts reflect the quality of service provided by Poole Fire Protection. Congratulations, Brad!
