Marshall Army Airfield, Fort Riley, Kansas

Poole Fire Protection was the Fire Protection Engineer for the Airfield Runway, Pavements and Southside Facilities at Marshall Army Airfield, Fort Riley Kansas. The Fort Riley Project is a $150 Million Design-Build Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract. The first task order consisted of construction of a 4,500-ft. runway with airfield lighting and approach lighting, helicopter parking aprons for a combat aviation brigade, taxiways, compass swing base, 6-bay helicopter maintenance hangar, two battalion headquarters, three company operations facilities, lighting control building, site work, utilities upgrade, and fueling pads. The project supports the stationing of the Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Riley, Kansas. The first task order was $90 million and took place from 2007 until 2009.

The 4,500-ft. runway is concrete with asphalt shoulders and overrun extensions. Two parking aprons with tie downs and grounding provide approximately 12,000 sq. yds. of additional parking. The General Support Aviation Battalion Aviation Unit Maintenance (AVUM) Hangar is a 63,000 sq. ft hangar providing maintenance space for CH-47 Chinook, UH-60 Blackhawk, and AH-64 Apache helicopters in six bays. Multi-leaved doors provide flexible openings and access for the aircraft. The hangar includes shop space for armaments, avionics, pneudraulics, engines, POOLE FIRE PROTECTION Statement of Qualifications 13 phase maintenance, battery storage, component cleaning, engine inspection, and night vision repair. The building is designed to DoD AT/FP standards and to LEED Silver standards.

Two Aviation Support Battalion Headquarters – Each building includes approximately 16,600 sq. ft. of housing for the command group, battalion staff, personnel, classrooms, operations and logistic staff, and limited storage. The buildings will be designed to DoD AT/FP standards and to LEED Silver standards. In addition it will include three Aviation Company Operations Facilities of 42,000 square feet to support 11 aviation companies. Space includes administrative space, arms vaults, storage areas, supply rooms, platoon offices, and mechanical electrical spaces. The buildings will be designed to DoD AT/FP standards and to LEED Silver standards.

Poole Fire Protection designed a wet pipe sprinkler system, an AFFF foam suppression system, a fire alarm and detection system and a mass notification system for all of the facilities in the project. The project won a Design-Build Institute of America award for 2009.
